Yes. Depending on your income, you may be entitled to receive FREE legal aid under the Garda Station Advice Scheme. In order to qualify for this for of legal aid, the Gardai must arrest you.
If the Gardai arrest you, and your income is below the prescribed limit, you will be entitled to have the cost of your legal advice covered by the Legal Aid Board, as part of the custody scheme: here is an article providing more detail about legal aid in Garda station. If the Gardai won't arrest you, then my advice is always to refuse to give an interview. And this is why: If the Gardai don't have enough evidence to justify arresting you; why would you take the chance of answering any questions for them that might give them a reason to arrest you? Gardai will only take statements from people when investigating a potential crime. They may be trying to ascertain if the information they have gathered is true, in full or in part, so, if they want to speak to you, in a Garda station, you have been linked to a crime in some way. They can ask you to attend voluntarily at a Garda station, to give a statement or be interviewed, even if you are a suspect.
